Step by step

Export a Telegram chat from Telegram Desktop

  1. 01

    Install Telegram Desktop on a Mac or PC and log in (the phone apps have no export button).

  2. 02

    Open the conversation and click ⋮ in the top right → Export chat history.

  3. 03

    Untick photos, videos and other media, and set Format to Machine-readable JSON.

  4. 04

    Click Export. Telegram saves a folder with result.json inside.

  5. 05

    Upload result.json.

Telegram may ask you to confirm the export on your phone and wait before it starts — that's a Telegram security check.

Honest limits

What it can't do

  • Export only works in Telegram Desktop; the iPhone and Android apps can't export.
  • Secret chats live only on the devices that took part, so they can't be exported.
  • Stickers, media and voice messages aren't analyzed — only text.
  • The report is built around two people; channels and big groups aren't what it's for.
