How to back up and export Snapchat chats
- Save the messages you want to keep: press and hold one in the chat and tap Save in Chat.
- Go to accounts.snapchat.com (or Settings, then My Data, in the app) and sign in.
- Open My Data, tick Chat History, and pick a date range.
- Confirm your email and Submit.
- Download the ZIP from Snapchat's email and open json/chat_history.json.
Only saved messages are included. Unsaved snaps and chats are deleted from Snapchat's servers once viewed or expired, and no tool can recover them.
Snapchat has no export button inside a chat. Instead, it gives you a privacy tool called My Data that packages your account data, including saved messages, into a ZIP. The catch is in the word saved: anything that disappeared is gone for good. What remains is still enough for AI chat analysis.

By default Snapchat deletes a message from its servers once it has been viewed or expired. Your export therefore contains Saved Chat History: messages that you or the other person saved by pressing and holding them, or that were kept by a chat's deletion setting. If a conversation was never saved, it will not be in the file, and no tool can bring it back.
How do you download your Snapchat data?
My Data is the only official way to get a copy of your conversations. The request takes a minute; the wait for the file is the slow part. Snapchat's own instructions are in Snapchat Support.
Sign in at accounts.snapchat.com
Open accounts.snapchat.com on your phone or computer and sign in. In the app, the same page is under your profile, then the gear icon for Settings, then My Data.
Open My Data
Click My Data on your account page. This is where you choose which categories of information to export.
Select Chat History and a date range
Tick Chat History. You can add other categories (account information, friends, Memories), but chats are all you need for analysis. Set a date range, or leave it off to receive everything; bigger requests take longer.
Confirm your email and submit
Confirm the email address for the notification and click Submit. You do not need to keep the page open.
Download the ZIP from the email link
Snapchat emails a download link when the file is ready, often within hours, up to seven days for large exports. You can also return to My Data and open See exports. Download the ZIP and open the json folder: chat_history.json holds your saved chats.

How do disappearing messages affect your export?
Default: messages disappear
Chats are deleted after they are viewed, and unopened Snaps expire after a set period. Snapchat keeps no server copy, so they can never appear in a download.
Saving a message keeps it
Press and hold a message to save it. Saved messages show with a highlighted background, stay in the chat, and are included in your export. Either person can save a message.
Change the deletion setting per chat
In a chat's settings, switch Delete Chats from "After Viewing" to "24 Hours After Viewing". Combined with saving the messages that matter, this gives you far more history to export later.

Is exporting private?
Privacy notes
Nobody is notified. The export is your own account data, which Snap's privacy policy gives you the right to access.
Treat the ZIP as sensitive. It can contain saved messages, location history, and account details. Keep it somewhere private and delete it when you are done.
