How to Export Facebook
Messenger Chat History (2026)

Facebook Messenger has no one-tap "Export Chat" button, but you can download every conversation through Meta's official Download Your Information tool. This guide walks you through each step, from requesting the data to finding your messages in the file.

HTML or JSON Format
Up to 48 Hours Processing

Facebook Messenger is one of the most widely used messaging apps in the world, and for many people it holds years of conversations with partners, friends, and family. Unlike WhatsApp, Messenger does not offer a single "Export Chat" button inside a conversation. Instead, Meta provides a dedicated Download Your Information (DYI) tool that lets you request a full copy of your messages.

Because Messenger is part of Meta, the process is almost identical to exporting Instagram DMs: both run through the same Accounts Center flow. Once you have your downloaded file, you can use AI-powered Messenger chat analysis to surface communication patterns, sentiment trends, and relationship dynamics hidden in your conversations.

Step-by-Step: Download Your Messenger Messages

The Download Your Information tool lives in the Meta Accounts Center. You can reach it from facebook.com on a computer, or from the Settings menu in the Facebook or Messenger app. The steps below are the same across all of them.

1Open Settings and find Accounts Center

On a computer, go to facebook.com, click your profile picture, then Settings & Privacy and Settings. In the Messenger or Facebook app, open your profile and tap the gear or menu icon. At the top of Settings you will see Accounts Center — tap it to open Meta's shared settings hub.

2Go to Download Your Information

Inside Accounts Center, select Your Information and Permissions, then tap Download Your Information. This is the official tool Meta uses for both Facebook and Messenger data.

3Select your profile and choose Messages

Choose the Facebook profile whose messages you want, then tap Download or transfer information. Select Some of Your Information, scroll to the Messages category, and check it. This ensures your file contains only conversations rather than your entire account history.

Tip: Selecting only Messages dramatically reduces both the file size and the time Meta needs to prepare your download.

4Set destination, format, date range and create files

Choose Download to Device as the destination. For the file format, pick JSON if you plan to run the data through an analysis tool, or HTML if you mainly want to read the conversations in a browser. Set the date range to All Time (or a narrower window if you only want a specific period), then tap Create Files.

Meta will ask you to confirm your password before it begins generating the file.

5Wait for the email, then download and extract

Meta prepares your file in the background and emails you when it is ready. For small message histories this can take minutes; for accounts with years of conversations it can take up to 48 hours. When you get the notification, return to Download Your Information, open Available Files, and download the ZIP.

Important: Download links expire after a few days. If you miss the window, simply request the file again.

HTML vs. JSON: Which Format Should You Choose?

Download Your Information gives you two format options, and the right choice depends on what you intend to do with your Messenger history.

JSON (Recommended for Analysis)

  • Structured data that tools can parse cleanly
  • Best fit for AI chat analysis and scripting
  • Compatible with MosaicChats and other analyzers

Choose this for AI chat analysis

HTML

  • Opens directly in any web browser
  • Visual layout that mirrors the chat thread
  • Great for reading conversations manually

Choose this for personal reading

How Long Does the Download Take?

Because Meta generates the file on its own servers, there is a waiting period before your download is ready. The wait depends almost entirely on how much message history you have.

Minutes

For accounts with few conversations

Hours

For active accounts with many chats

Up to 48h

For very large accounts with years of history

Understanding Your Downloaded Data

The Download Your Information tool gives you everything you selected in a single ZIP file. Even when you choose only Messages, the archive includes all of your conversations, so knowing the folder structure helps you find a specific chat.

facebook-your_username-date/

your_facebook_activity/

messages/

inbox/

contact_name/ → message_1.json

Each conversation gets its own folder inside inbox/, named after the contact or group. Inside, the message files (such as message_1.json or the HTML equivalent) hold the full thread. Here is what the export does and does not capture:

What Your Download Includes

  • - All text messages with timestamps
  • - Sender names
  • - Reactions to messages
  • - Shared media links and attachments
  • - Call logs and voice message indicators
  • - Group conversation metadata

What Is Not Included

  • - Messages you deleted before the request
  • - Vanish mode messages
  • - End-to-end encrypted chats (separate download)
  • - Other people's deleted messages
  • - Messages outside your selected date range

A Note on End-to-End Encrypted Chats

Messenger now uses end-to-end encryption for many conversations by default. Those chats are not part of the standard Download Your Information export — they require a separate process that pulls the data from the secure storage on your device or in your encrypted backup. Look for the dedicated option for end-to-end encrypted chats in Messenger's privacy settings.

For details, see Meta's help page on downloading data from end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats.

Tips for a Smooth Messenger Data Download

  • Select only Messages: Downloading your entire Facebook account produces a huge file. Limiting the request to Messages keeps it manageable and speeds up processing.
  • Use JSON for analysis: If your goal is to run the data through an AI analyzer, choose JSON. HTML is harder for tools to parse reliably.
  • Set the date range deliberately: Choose All Time for a complete history, or narrow it to a specific relationship period if that is all you need.
  • Check your email and spam folder: The "your file is ready" notification can land in promotions or spam. Look there if you do not see it within a day.
  • Download promptly: The prepared file expires after a few days. Grab it as soon as you can to avoid having to request it again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the other person see that I downloaded my messages?

No. Meta does not notify anyone when you request a copy of your own information. The download is completely private.

Can I export just one Messenger conversation?

The Download Your Information tool exports all of your conversations together. After downloading, you can open the single folder for the chat you care about inside the inbox directory.

Does the download include messages I deleted?

No. Only messages that still exist in your inbox at the time of the request are included. Anything you deleted earlier will not appear.

What format should I pick for chat analysis?

Choose JSON. It is structured for machines to read, which makes it the best option for AI chat analysis tools like MosaicChats. Pick HTML only if you just want to read the messages in a browser.
